Calling Your Legislator

Calling your legislator is much like talking to your legislator in person but likely shorter. Be prepared with your “elevator pitch” and your ask. Don’t worry about stats or anything like that; they want to know why Outdoor School is such an impactful experience and how it has changed your life. Practice with someone ahead of time to get comfortable telling your story in a short amount of time. Before you call, make sure you are in a quiet space without distraction. Be prepared to leave a message or talk with a staffer if your legislator is unavailable. Introduce yourself and tell the legislator your affiliation with Outdoor School. You also want to be prepared to answer any questions they might have. If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t hesitate to tell them that you don’t know and you’ll find the answer and get back to them. Make sure you write that question down then reach out to the Friends of Outdoor School team to get the answer and email or call them back! It never hurts to have a second chance to chat with a decision-maker.
